The microclimate in differs from other rooms in that the air in it is constantly saturated with a large amount of water vapor. Moreover, taking a shower or a bath, you can accidentally direct the jet upward, soaking the ceiling. Water can act from above, if neighbors forget to close the tap at home. Therefore, the finish should in the worst case withstand the effects of moisture, at best - to prevent water from entering the room when flooding from above.
The ceiling in the bathroom due to specific operating conditions is constantly becoming dirty, so it is better to use such a finishing material that it would be easy to take care of. Optimal option - cleaning the surface with a conventional sponge and household detergent.

Method 1 - Painting

This is the most simple way of finishing, which, however, is not without attractiveness. In addition, for most people is very attractive affordable price of this option finishes.

However, the minimum labor costs and financial investments can be expected only if the top slab in your bathroom is flat and has no significant defects, which should be eliminated before painting.

Otherwise, there is a long and time-consuming work on leveling, plastering, puttying, priming and so on. The cost of materials and work will be so great that it is better to choose another option for finishing.

I note at once that for painting the ceiling it is necessary to use special paints that well tolerate operation in moist air and do not crack under the influence of high temperature. I used the following options in my work:

Acrylic.A kind of water-dispersion paint, which is specially designed for painting surfaces exposed to moisture. After application and drying, it forms an attractive looking, durable and elastic coating that is characterized by a long service life and easy maintenance. The paint on the ceiling will not wash, even if rubbed with a sponge dampened with non-corrosive household detergent.
Latex.These paints differ in that due to their special composition they are able to fill small surface defects and are not subject to cracking as a result of small shifts in the substrate. Excellent transfer of moisture and do not break down with direct contact with water. Latex paint is often used to paint a mineral (plastered) surface.
Silicone.Probably not the best option for decorating the ceiling in the bathroom. Limits the widespread use of this paint only a fairly high price. However, the performance characteristics at the height: the paint is not washed off with water, does not lose its appearance during operation, does not crack and does not burn out. On its surface, fungi, mold and other microorganisms do not multiply.

Despite all the attractiveness of this option, the use of paint to decorate the ceiling in the bathroom has several disadvantages:

the ceiling painted in one color will not be original, the position may slightly correct the use of several colors in the design or drawing on the surface of any patterns, patterns, ornaments (although the latter requires considerable skill);
the maximum service life of the paint is about 10 years, and even in the absence of leaks from neighbors from the upper floor;
the material gradually absorbs into the mud and despite the careful care dims, losing its attractiveness (to correct the situation, however, it is possible with the same paint that is applied over the tarnished);
when painting the ceiling, it is difficult to disguise engineering communications (ventilation and electric wires);
with incorrectly selected paint there is a danger of the appearance on the ceiling of mold and fungus, which not only do not decorate the bathroom, but also present a danger to the human body.

For smart owners who do not want to paint the ceiling, but do not intend to spend their money on expensive finishing materials, there is another option - plastic lamellas, which I will discuss below.

Method 2 - Plastic panels

This is also an economical option of finishing, which, however, allows you to design an excellent looking ceiling without laborious alignment. Yes, and there will be a place where to hide plastic hoses with wires and air ducts.

Outwardly, this material is a separate hollow lamellae of a certain width (often 25 cm), which in its form resemble a wooden euro-wall. They are painted in different colors, the surface is decorated with patterns, they can be applied three-dimensional drawings.

The panels are mounted on the crate of galvanized profile or wood. It makes it possible to level the surface without using cement plaster and putty (I described this process in detail in one of the articles on this site). In addition, you can easily arrange a spotlight or LED backlight.

A few words about other advantages of plastic panels:

Water resistance. Plastic perfectly tolerates operation in moist air and does not change its technical characteristics in any way even in case of direct contact with liquid. Therefore, panels can be safely used for bathroom finishing.
Resistance to ultraviolet radiation. The color of the material and its shape do not change under the action of direct sunlight. This is important when there is a window in your plumbing room.
Long service life. The material serves as long as the tile. In this case, then from above will not worsen the appearance of the panels. The narrow link is only a wooden frame susceptible to rotting. However, it can always be replaced with a structure made of galvanized profiles.
High reflectivity. Glossy ceiling plastic panels reflect light well, therefore visually increase the size of the bathroom. This effect can be strengthened by properly organized backlighting using LED fixtures installed directly in the plastic.
Ease of care. The plastic is perfectly cleaned with a regular sponge and soap solution. The paint from its surface is not washed away regardless of the intensity of the exposure.
Cheapness. The cost of implementing such a project fits into the framework of even a small budget. In some cases, when the ceiling has large defects, the ceiling price of plastic will be lower than the staining measures.
Ecological compatibility. Despite some criticism from opponents of this method of finishing, plastic panels are completely safe material and do not cause harm to human health. The level of emission of harmful substances is much lower than the norm.

The drawbacks can only be attributed to the accumulation of dust and dirt in the seams between the individual lamellas. However, if thorough cleaning in the bathroom is done in a timely manner, this trouble can be easily avoided.

In conclusion, I want to draw your attention to the difference between wall and ceiling plastic panels. The former have a stronger surface, but also a greater weight. Lamella for the ceiling is more fragile, but also light, so to hold them do not need to design a powerful frame.

If the plastic slats are too simple for your exquisite taste, you can install another structure in the bathroom - a suspended ceiling made of polyvinylchloride linen.

Method 3 - Stretch ceiling

This is a polymer film that is heated to a certain temperature and installed on a pre-fixed frame. After cooling, the plastic decreases in size and stretches, forming a perfectly flat surface.

The options for designing this method of decoration can not be considered. It can be a glossy and matte surface, one-color and color, with ornament and photography. The canvas can be combined with other materials, to equip it with lighting and so on.

In addition to the aesthetic component, the stretch ceiling serves as an excellent protection against flooding. When the moisture penetrates from above, it accumulates it, sustaining a load of up to 100 kg per square meter. That is, the perfect finishing of your sanitary facilities will not be affected, and the fluid will be carefully gently solicited by the specialists called for this.

When installing a false ceiling between its surface and the slab, you can leave a blank space for the installation of wiring and pipes of the ventilation system. Polymer cloth will hide all engineering communications without additional efforts on your part.

Once I performed the finishing of the ceiling in the bathroom in an apartment located on the top floor of a city high-rise building. So, the use of a false ceiling allowed me to easily and simply lay inside the insulation, which protected the room from heat loss through the attic floor.

Unfortunately, despite a large number of advantages, there were some small but annoying shortcomings. Personally, I do not like the stretch ceiling for the following reasons:

Independently to carry out installation of a tension ceiling hardly it will turn out. At least because it requires a thermal gun, which will either have to be bought or leased. In any case, certain skills are required to work with the polymer cloth, otherwise the quality of the installation will be unacceptable.
Polyvinyl chloride film is not so difficult to pierce with not too accurate operation. As a result, it will not only lose its appearance, but will cease to serve as a protection against the flood from above. Therefore, I would not recommend exposing the ceiling to sharp or hard objects.
When using a white ceiling, yellow spots may appear at the places where the canvas contacts the lighting fixtures. To prevent this from happening, it is better to use LED lamps that do not heat up.

In the case when the stretch ceiling does not allow you to realize all your design ideas, you can resort to designing the most complex multi-level design, the shape of which is limited only by your imagination. For this purpose, plasterboard is the best.

Method 4 - Moisture-resistant plasterboard

Naturally, we are talking about a special, moisture-resistant, drywall that does not break down when used in a room with a high level of humidity. Such material is usually painted in green and costs a little more than usual.

To fix the GCR on the ceiling, a frame made of galvanized profiles is used. The configuration of the future structure depends directly on its shape. At once I will say that without having sufficient experience in the manufacture of gypsum board structures, it will be problematic to do something complex.

But the master is able to build such a complex construction (and sometimes combined GCL with glass or stretch ceiling) that the appearance of the ceiling in your plumbing room will envy all your acquaintances.

This type of ceiling design in the bathroom has many advantages:

Gypsum cardboard is a fireproof material (as opposed to plastic), it tolerates moisture well and absorbs sound waves well.
The material is made of natural components (gypsum and cellulose), therefore it is safe to install and does not cause harm to human health during operation.
The cost of implementing the project for finishing the ceiling with plasterboard will be quite low. Moreover, with the help of the frame, it is easy to level the slab plate, which has significant differences in height.

At once I will tell, that multilevel gypsum plasterboard designs do not need to be installed in baths with low ceilings. In addition, it would be superfluous to know about several other drawbacks of such a decision:

gypsum board after installation requires additional decorative finishing - puttying and staining;
despite moisture resistance, the material does not stand up to direct contact with water, so then on top of it will force you to restore the destroyed structure;
to maintain the appearance of the ceiling will have to tint it from time to time.

Nevertheless, in my opinion, drywall is the most universal way of finishing the bathroom. Although there are more exotic options, which will be discussed below.

Method 5 - Suspended tiles

One of the attractive-looking and affordable in the implementation of options for decoration - a suspended ceiling in the bathroom of the tiles. Unlike gypsum plasterboard multilevel structures, such material does not require additional finish finishing - priming, filling, staining and so on.

On sale there is a cassette suspended ceiling and honeycomb type structures. They are made of different materials, but most often I have seen such options:

organic glass;
metal;
plastic;
mineral plates.

Several times I mounted suspended constructions with LED backlighting. With their help you can arrange in the bathroom soft diffused lighting, which adds coziness to the room to be cleaned.

The cassette ceiling, despite its attractive appearance and decent performance characteristics, still has several significant drawbacks:

The ceiling of this type does not always fit into the interior of the bathroom and the apartment as a whole. It gives the room a somewhat formal and cool style, which is not always acceptable for a home. But here everything depends on the chosen style of design: for example, for a bathroom high-tech, such a ceiling will be almost the best solution.
Not everyone knows how to hang a tiled ceiling and do it right. The installation is carried out according to strictly defined technology, the violation of which not only worsens the appearance of the surface, but also shortens the service life of the material.
The free space between the top slab and the decorative material, although it makes it possible to hide all engineering communications, is not protected from moisture. So, there can freely develop mold and fungus, and do it absolutely unnoticed. Therefore, it is important to take care of the quality antiseptic treatment of the ceiling before fixing the suspended tile.

If you do not like the square elements for some reason, you can turn to another option - the rack ceilings.

Method 6 - Aluminum slats

For the manufacture of such a ceiling, metal slats are used. Most often I installed an aluminum ceiling in the bathroom, because this material has an attractive appearance, is not susceptible to corrosion and retains its luster and integrity regardless of the humidity in the room.

Reels made of aluminum can be decorated in various ways:

gold-plated;
chrome plated;
matte;
glossy;
monochrome;
multicolor;
with a pattern applied.

Most of all I like polished glossy slats. Due to their reflective surface, they visually expand the space of a normally cramped bathroom. Experienced designers, using this effect, create unique and spectacular interiors using the slatted ceiling.

Mirror and glass ceilings in general, despite all its external appeal, will not work in all cases, since they also have several disadvantages:

Due to its reflective ability, a mirror ceiling creates an excessive shine in the bathroom, which is not always well perceived by the occupants of the apartment. Especially if the height of the bathroom leaves much to be desired, and the room has to be quite a long time.
Care for the mirror surface, and even horizontally located at high altitude, is very difficult. And not every landlady will agree to rub it daily to shine.

Method 1 - Putty and coloring

The first thing that comes to mind at the thought of what to do the ceiling in a plumbing room is a simple patching of the surface and subsequent painting. These operations are easy to do by themselves, and the price of materials will be small.

However, before you decide on this option, I want to mention several important points:

This method of finishing will be profitable and not very time consuming only if the interfloor is flat, that is, you do not have to level out large differences in elevation and curvature of the surface. Otherwise, for a thick layer of putty or plaster to rest on a horizontal surface, you will have to resort to additional tricks, which I would not advise.
Use the paints and do not listen to the advice of grandmothers who recommend covering the surface with chalk. You do not want to think every year (and even more often) how to whitewash the ceiling, located 3 meters above the floor (well, that's in my case).

I will not separately highlight the advantages and disadvantages of such a solution. The fact is that during the conversation with the colonel, it became clear that some characteristics, which I consider minuses, he perceives as pluses, and vice versa.

To increase the service life of the ceiling, I advise you to take care of the effective ventilation of the bathroom.
The plastic perfectly tolerates not only moist air, but also direct contact with the liquid. At the same time, neither its appearance nor its performance properties are affected.	Panels, no matter how tightly installed, have seams, under which the mud gets clogged over time. It is easy to clean with a cloth. But sometimes, especially because of the high humidity, mold appears inside, which can only be removed with antiseptics.
Products are easily and easily installed with their own hands. You just need to decide how to install a metal profile, and even a plastic man can sew it with plastic.	It is said that the polymer has a bad effect on human health, releasing harmful chemicals into the air. Although if you want diversity, modern manufacturers can give you it. In the shops you can find the following options:

chrome parts;
gold plated panels;
monochrome products;
lath ceilings with a picture.

Parts have a certain flexibility, so you can do curvilinear designs that diversify the design of the bathroom.

As for the installation, then there's nothing to say. Everything you need is included, so if you ever collected a children's designer, and there will not be any problems here. You just need to get acquainted with the instructions and get down to business.

I will also mention the shortcomings. Personally, I singled out two points:

If you buy racks, which need to be installed tightly to each other, dirt can accumulate in the seams between them. Naturally, you can remove it by simple cleaning.
Using a lath ceiling requires a special interior styling. And not for all bathroom shelves this solution is suitable. We need to plan ahead, which was not done in our colonel case.

One more thing. Suspended rack structure takes a certain height of the walls. On the one hand, it's good, so you can hide engineering communications. The frame is covered with plasterboard sheets. Immediately mentioned that you need to choose a moisture-resistant material that does not collapse under the influence of water vapor and is additionally treated with antiseptics. The latter prevent the development of mold, fungi and other harmful microorganisms.

Visually moisture-resistant plasterboard differs in color. The cardboard in this material is painted green and its surface is marked with GKLV.

The very same lights and suction ventilation holes look organically on the surface of the ceiling, without spoiling the design of the bathroom.	Drywall requires additional decorative finishing. Here, which for you, I think, is no longer surprising, too, using a special hanging design, similar to the one that has to be designed for the drywall ceiling. However, finished cells or cassettes are suspended on it.

If to compare with GKL, this material does not require decorative finishing, and, therefore, priming, staining and so on. Personally for me, it's just a huge plus.

By the way, tiles can be made of different materials:

organic glass;
metal;
plastic;
mineral plates.

I mounted once the plates with built-in lighting. It turned out just a breathtaking bathroom, which looked like a fantastic cave or compartment of a spaceship (someone like a fantasy works).

The drawbacks of the described solution can be attributed to the fact that not always cassettes or cells fit into the design of the bathroom or your home as a whole. Often such a ceiling is placed in office or commercial buildings, so you and the house may have a similar association, which for me personally is not good.

On the other hand, if you design a house in high-tech style, the metal tiles on the ceiling will fit perfectly.

Method 6 - Mirrors

I've talked a lot about reflective materials on the ceiling. And now I'll tell you about the best of these solutions - mirrors. If you decide to use them in a plumbing room, it will turn out just smart. Although the money will have to spend a lot.

So, the mirrors weigh a lot, because they can be installed on a reinforced frame of a metal profile. Mirror plates are fastened to the crate by means of screws, under which it is necessary to drill holes (and, believe me, this is not so simple as it seems).

You can, of course, cheat and put the ceiling "mirror type." These are special panels that have a surface that reflects light well. They are mounted on their own suspension system, and it can be done quickly and easily.

An example of such a solution can be called the products of Armstrong, located in St. Petersburg. But I think that in any city there are proposals of such systems. Immediately I will warn that the skeleton of inexpensive systems can be prone to corrosion, therefore it is necessary to organize effective airing.

The use of mirror ceilings has several drawbacks, which I did not fail to mention in my conversation with the colonel:

This ceiling is a source of too intense shine, which may not like. Especially if it is located too low or have to stay in the bathroom for a long time.
The mirror surface, so that it looks impressive, will often have to be washed. And if with a vertical conventional mirror this process is quite simple, then there can be very great difficulties with the ceiling. Therefore, it is necessary to agree in advance such a project with its second half.

Method 7 - Stretch

This option I left last, because it was chosen by my friend - a police officer. And I completely agree with him, because such a design has many advantages:

perfectly tolerates the impact of moist air, without changing its appearance and technical characteristics;
does not require additional decorative finishing after installation;
the stretch cloth can hide any amount of engineering communications laid under the ceiling;
it is well cleaned and cleaned using ordinary household detergents;
has many design options (can be monophonic, with a pattern, with three-dimensional photo printing, matte, glossy, textured, and so on).

Another important plus is the ability to withstand a large amount of water leaking from the top floor. If you happen to have such a nuisance, all the liquid will be delayed by the ceiling. After the experts will salt it, and the decorative material will restore its size.

I personally can only name two shortcomings that prevent the choice of this option:

The ceiling is not likely to be installed by yourself. At least because it requires special equipment and materials.
Canvas can be easily pierced by any object. This will not only worsen its appearance, but also make it impossible to retain the spilled water.

I will point out one more feature. If you buy a white ceiling and put spotlights in it, be prepared for the fact that the polymer web can become yellow at this site because of the high temperature. To avoid this, put the LED lights.
